Cow Trivia

I am tired of just of writing about quilting and such. And you really don't want me to write about housework or other cleaning, heck I don't even want to. So I thought I would do something related to the farm  How about Cow Trivia * A cow has 32 teeth, and will chew about 40 - 50 times a minute. *A cow will chew for up to 8 hours a day * Cows move their jaws about 40,000 times a day *Cows spend about 10 hours a day laying down. * Cows will stand up and lay down about 14 times a day. *Cows can sleep while they're standing. ( is that where cow tipping comes in) * The first cow arrived in the U.S. in 1611 in Jamestown. * A cow will consume about 40 lbs. of food in a day. * The hamburger debuted at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. * Almost 2,000 quarter pound hamburgers can be made from the ground beef in one cow. * Cows have an acute sense of smell and can detect odors up to 6 miles away. Pretty cool facts.

Bye Bye May

I know I have said it before and that is how fast time seems be rushing past me. Here it is the end of May and the first time since the "Little Dudes" have been born that I had missed their birthday. They turned 5 and growing so fast. They will be here for a visit the end of June and will stay for 3 weeks. That will be here before you know it. Even though time is quickly passing, I seem to be so slow at doing things and I thought I would be done with the flag quilt today. But I was able to have all the units made now. It took a little figuring out. Added a piece to a corner of the background fabric. I could not tell from the photo how it was constructed so I needed guess and measure. I think I have it figured out. Right now it a square shape that I added the corner piece to and gives it a zigzag edge but I plan on to trimming off the points when it all together. Part of the reason it has taken a bit longer than I thought it would take is

Hump Day

Boy it turned out to be such a pretty day. Ended up doing chores this afternoon, cleaning out the nesting boxes and collected 7 eggs today. The girls are working hard these days. one is out of the shot Checked on the heifers, there are nine of them that I'm responsible for and of the nine... four of them have had calves. They are so cute. That's right, I'm so cute.... I'm still putting up the last of the outdoor Christmas decoration. The inflatables needed to put in their boxes. I had them in a chair on the porch, just hadn't packed them away. Then put up all the electric cords. Done finally. Did do some sewing. Made the flying geese and now I'm trimming them all, 120 of them. Sewing the woven fabric is a little tricky. Stretches  some and didn't think about how the fabric was directional and when putting the units together it did not go all in the same direction.  I don't care for that

What's Up

More like what has been up the past few days Saturday  morning was so cold and "the man of the place" needed help with putting out hay for the cows. I don't get to do every weekend because my father-in-law usually help but not when it's so cold. Frost on the grass. We bundled up and off we went. I take pictures a lot of the time with my phone and can again now. Had the battery replaced after months of not being able to take more than one or two and then the battery would be drained. Didn't realize for awhile this was going on that it was all the battery faults. I should've know but when it finally would not take a charge it was  duh  moment.  Here are some of the pictures from feeding This girl can not resist playing in the newly made pile of hay. After the ring is removed they just have to root around and get playful. Beside driving the old truck with the bales on it, my

Bad Cows Revisited

I wanted to share another past post and one of my favorite memories. I wrote this December 2011 and makes me laugh thinking back to when this happened.  hope you get a giggle too. Bad Cows The " man of the place" decided that since our pasture are being grazed down and he is trying to stretch as much out of them as he can before we have to start putting out hay. He figure that for one last time  he was going to let them graze our house yard. Now this is not the first time and I had put up with his idea of   mowing . (past post)   That time it was just a few of the older cows, they are slow and not so curious. But this time it was the first time mothers (2yrs old) Like last time I can put up with the spots of natural fertilizer, that goes away with rain and snow. I will barely tolerate them pruning my monkey grass. It was looking good and would of all winter, but I tell myself it will grow back. Then there is that phrase "they

Farm. Chores

I thought I would show some of the farm chores I do on a daily basis. I tend to the chickens first thing in the morning to let the girls out, give a little scratch and check the nesting boxes.  Woo hoo another egg this morning.  This is the girl right there, in front.  She is the only one out of the eight that is laying eggs right now. She deserves extra scratch if I can figure out how to keep the others out of it.  Then I'll walk down to the barn to feed the heifers.  We have 10 young heifers separated, which I feed 4 buckets of cattle cubes to every day.  We have also 12 heifers who are going to give birth within the next couple of months in the pasture right next to the barn. That is also where the container that holds the cattle cubes is located.  And as you can see I have a group waiting for me to start dishing out the cubes. I have to fill 4 buckets up, but I can only carry two at a time into the barn.
