Making Buttermilk

: Have you ever try making your own cultured buttermilk? Once I had read about how it was done, I knew I just had to give it a shot. I use a lot of buttermilk in my cooking and baking and one of the things I like about it is the long shelf life it has for a dairy item. The way I did mine was to use some buttermilk that I had purchased at the store. I believe I read that there are powdered culture that can be used but it was easier for me this way. STEP 1.   Need to start with a clean and sterilized jar. I used a quart size.   STEP 2. Start with fresh milk and cultured buttermilk.  The fresher the better. If your buttermilk is older than 3 weeks it might not have enough active bacteria to give the results needed. I used 1% milk but that is because I wanted just a little fat in  my milk. Gives it a little richer flavor but you can use skim if you want. STEP 3. Add a bacterial starter of 6 to 8 ounces of active fresh cultured buttermilk to a clean quar

What's Cooking on the Prairie

Today is the link up over at  Judy's Patchwork Times  and the ingredients this time is Orange Juice. This is a recipe I have been making for some time that I found in one of Dr. McDougall's book. Next weeks challenge is Honey.  Sunbeam Tapioca 3 Tbsp Instant Tapioca 1 cup Pineapple juice 1 cup Orange juice 1 1/2 Tbsp Lemon juice 1/2 cup Canned Mandarin Orange Sections, drained 1 cup Canned Pineapple (crushed or Tidbits). drained Combine the instant tapioca, pineapple juice, and orange juice in a saucepan. Cook and stir over a medium heat until the mixture comes to a boil. Remove from heat; add the lemon juice. Cool, stirring occasionally. Add the fruit and chill until firm This is a tart dessert so if you add whip cream it sweetens it up some but I like it the way it is. W.W. points is 17 total and depending on how many serving you divide it up to give you pts. per servings.

Weekly Goal

It's amazing how I can take my good health for granted, get little done when your not up to par. I wasn't able to get all of  last week goals completed. So I thought about it and figured I was expecting to much of myself with 4 items. I'm going back to keeping it simple for myself and it's going to be only one goal for the week and that is to get my vegetable garden planted Wish my garden would looked like this.

Resting and Reading with a Little Knitting

I have been resting and reading about what I want to do when I'm back in shape. It is easier laying here seeing how it's winding and in the 40's today. So with a fire in the stove, something to drink and a comfy sofa I'm reading about vegetable gardening and apple trees. There is no better reading than seed catalogs. You can learn so much about what to plant, when to plant and tips of the trade. There are beautiful photos and very informative charts. If you are looking for some good catalogs yourself I have a list that I received from  Allan Storjohan . It is a lengthily list and has quite a few wonderful seed companies. Besides the veggie I'm looking for a couple of new apple trees. Come to find out my apple tree is a Lady Apple which is mainly a decorate small apple, very small used in table decoration and floral arrangements. Not what I what to have, so I'm thinking the Liberty apple. It is resistant to scabs , fire blight and cedar apple rust. S

What's up Monday

What' Up on my design wall is a baby quilt using up some of my scraps. As you can see it did not make a dent in my scrap pile and that is after making the mistake of making too many units in the beginning. I have enough here on my table to make another one. So when I'm done I'll have two little girl quilts. I was able to finish some on my Some Kind of Wonderful last night but have so much more to do on it. You can see more of this quilt and other projects from the book here.  When I get more of mine done I need to post my progress there. I have the first two rows of applique done and most of the filler blocks done but it's on Git-R-Done list for this month as a work on project.  Will see what I can get done, seeing how  I'm not moving very much at the moment. I think I can say I lost the battle of not getting the "Man of the Place" bug.  I have too much to do to be sick. Do you ever feel like that too?  One of the

Slow Sunday Stitching

This is going to be my first time linking up to Slow Sunday Stitching  at Kathy's Quilts. I think this is a neat idea  for others to share what they are working on by hand, it can be any kind of needlework. For me this is a very easy post to write because I love to do piecework.  My problem is I like to do too many types. It can be quilting, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, sewing or appliqueing. I end up having many "irons in the fire".  I am normally working on something while watching TV. Tonight I'm working on one of the Git-R-Done's, embroidering on blocks for Some Kind of Wonderful. And if I get those done I'll do some appliqueing on the Pea Ridge Lily blocks The pattern is from one of Barbara Brackman's books. Now for an update on my stash report seeing how I didn't get around to updating last week, I'll be combining week 8 & 9. I used up mainly scraps from years of saving. After I took this picture I di
