Five On Friday

To was a day of firsts and finishes. Last night another one of the heifers had her calf. Cute little black one. I think it's a little girl by the looks of her delicate features. The girls laid 13 eggs today. To think they started laying the beginning on the month. Started with one egg a day to now 13.  Yesterday there was 10. Another first  Sauerkraut is finished doing it's  thing. Made this batch last month and now it's time to move to other jars and put in the frig. Ended up with 5 quarts. Another finish is the Birds of a Feather today. Went together so nicely and when quilted it's going in my livingroom. It measures 67 X 76 Good size lap quilt. Then the last is a little about my first time trip to The Mercantile (Ree Drummond's store) in Pawhuska Oklahoma. Had a great time and the building is so beautiful. They did a great job making it look like a new old store.  We

Five on Friday

I have something that happened this week that I would like to share and link it to Five on Friday  at Amy's love made my home.  Now the first two are both very exciting and I don't know which one to pick, so what I'll do is pick the one that took the longest for it to happen. And that is I finally finished hand quilting and have the binding on my 30 Sampler. I started the sampler in 2010 and started quilting on it the next year 2011 and for the last five years off and on I've been plugging away. But now I can check it off the list. Plus you know it completed when the cat's claim it first. The other biggie for the week is after couple months of the chickens have barely giving me an egg a week, I went out there to check the nesting boxes seeing how it's been a couple days since the last time, I found five eggs. I guess the girls could read my mind because I have been contemplating getting some new chicks to replace the old girls. I g

Five on Friday

My five will all start with the letter F 1. Fish chowder. When I was at my daughters this past year she made this dish hoping that "the little dudes" would like it. Now Grammy loved it but the boys they didn't care for it too much. I thought it was mighty tasty so I got a copy of the recipe and I have made it a couple times since I've been home. 2.  Fresh carrots. Now I needed some carrots to go in the chowder and I went out to the garden because I still have a 6 foot patch of carrots in the ground.  The really neat thing about these carrots is I did not sow the seeds myself. I had let a couple carrots from last year go to seed over the summer and this bed self seeded itself. Have to say it's been the best crop of carrots I've had in... I don't  know how long. 3. Flannel pajamas. Since my girls don't read my blog very often I don't have to worry about them finding out about getting flannel pajamas for Chri

Gratitude

Being that it is Thanksgiving here in the United States, it's the time for us to reflect on the things that we are thankful for. So it made me start to think yesterday about gratitude, and how I use it in my life. So my Five on Friday will be about gratitude. 1. I believe it started mainly with Opera TV show and her introduction for herself of her daily five things she's thankful for. I believe that was back in the late 90s And I had read the book, being that it was one of Oprah's book club, about gratitude and thankfulness. 2. Keeping a journal. I have always kept a journal since I was a very young girl. But after watching Oprah back in the late 90's I started adding five things that I was grateful for in with my daily writing..                                                           3. As time went along I was writing less in my journal and  writing down what I was thankful for was one of those  particular habit I was  get

Five on Friday

Five on Fridays is back on Amy's blog so skip over there and give it a look to see what others are posting for their five My five this weeks........  Is lessons learned on straw bale gardening This was my first year to attempt straw bale gardening. It's a very ingenious way of gardening if you do not have good soil, the space or energy to have a garden. It's temporary so if your're a renter, you don't have to worry about making any permanent changes to the yard. It can be done on concrete if you don't have any place for garden. I do not fit any of those criteria's but I wanted to give it a try anyway. I have a large enough garden to keep me busy all year but I was fascinated by this idea and wanted to give it a try so here are the five things I learned from my experiment this summer 1. I found out that you will need to look for a tightly compress bale. Mine were loosely packed which created some issues when com
