Some Flooding Here

You have to watch out for what you wish for, we need rain but not this much at one time. The good thing is we missed out on tornados here but not everyone in Northeast Oklahoma was that lucky. Thank goodness no major injuries that I know of. Just property damage. Look how much rain we received in less than 9 hours. Besides the fence being moved and bent all to heck the wire fence (water gap) is laying there in the grass with debris entangled in it The force of the water moved the hay ring and fence a good distance. Look at how much debris is stuck in those fence panels Wow, what destruction fast moving water can do. It can move fences  and in some cases totally remove them. Especially the water gaps, which is a wire fence that stretches across the creek or drainage ditch. This creek is usually around 6 - 8 feet across and up to 2 feet deep. Now a good 25 feet across and probably 6 - 8 feet ...

Good Intentions

I had planned that this past weekend would be like most weekends and that is "The Man of the Place" would be tending the cows and I would be home doing my chores and maybe some sewing. I had plans to try to finish up my Easy Street. But this weekend was going to be different, seeing how my father-in-law was not going to be able to help with the feeding of the cows. That meant I get to help, it's been awhile and I have to admit I have missed it.  My job is to drive the feed truck, that is loaded with 3 bales of hay, drive out to the pasture where needed and put the hay out to the cows.    Here they come, its funny about cows most of the time they will walk single file to where they are going and if one of the cows stop all the ones behind that cow stop too. No one will go around, they will just stand there and wait.   Someone is trying to sneak a nibble of hay, one of my jobs is to try to keep them off the bales.   I get 3 bales on the truck ...

Fall Decorations

The pass couple of days I have been digging around looking for items I could use to decoration the front porch. I found things I forgot I had.  I love to do holiday decorating. When I lived in California our home was in a cul de sac. A few of the neighbors would go all out, almost a competition but a friendly one. I thought it was a lot of fun and so neat to see. So now that I live in the country and off the road, no one see our house. But I still want to decorate, "the man of the place' just doesn't understand, he said no one but us will see it.  That's  OK So I'll show you, its like you are out for a walk and checking out my house.  It has been fun and I will probably keep rearranging items for awhile. I have a habit of doing that. And I like the fall decorating the best because I will be able to leave it out till Thanksgiving. Of course, Pete the cat...

Bad Cows

The " man of the place" decided that since our pasture are being grazed down and he is trying to stretch as much out of them as he can before we have to start putting out hay. He figure that for one last time  he was going to let them graze our house yard. Now this is not the first time and I had put up with his idea of   mowing . (past post)   That time it was just a few of the older cows, they are slow and not so curious. But this time it was the first time mothers (2yrs old) Like last time I can put up with the spots of natural fertilizer, that goes away with rain and snow. I will barely tolerate them pruning my monkey grass. It was looking good and would of all winter, but I tell myself it will grow back. Then there is that phrase "they are worse than kids", well that is what young heifers are. Kids at least most of the time listen and are not 1200 lbs. of stubbornness. This one found the broom on the porch and started eating i...

Lawn Care Country Style

These past few days "the man of the place" has been taking care of the end of the year lawn care, having the lawn mowed; the bovine way This is our new young Angus bull, isn't he handsome. Now I would not reccomend this way for just anyone, you need to have a couple of well natured bovines, fenced in yard and patience, they are not fast. And they just don't mow the yard but also fertilized at the same time. Now I can not say that they do as well as the lawn mower, but it is environmentally friendly. I would imagine that the carbon footprint on this would be very low. The only thing now to be done is the "the man of the place" needs to figure out how is going to spread the fertilizer around. Till next time Kat =^..^= Go here  to check out more.

Been Catching Up Around the Farm

The past couple of the days I have been taking time to get out in the garden and harvest veggies and checking on how everything was doing. Then there is "the girls". One of the older girls decided that she needed a new wardrobe. She has a twin in the group and this how she did look right before I left Beautiful hen isn't she, white, fluffy and very clean But I notice a few days last week all these white feathers around the hen yard and that the one I speak of was losing feathers. I did not take the time to take a photo but this is how she looks now, a week later Looks like I have been getting her ready for the stock pot.  They sure grow back fast. I can't wait to see how white and fluffy she'll get. Thank goodness they do not have a mirror in the hen house.  I do not think she would like the new look, thou a lot of older ladies like to get their "do's"  cut short,  if you know what I mean The cows are good, "the man of the place" has...

Doing the Happy Dance

We are all doing the happy dance here on the farm. (this is suppose to be chicken impersonating Elvis). We have gotten some rain and I mean a significant amount too. Check it out. Look 2 inches of rain fell in about 8 hours. It was quite the storm. We have been in a very bad drought here in Oklahoma and the cattle have been suffering because of it. So this is a blessing. What a relief to see rain clouds over these very dry pasture. Unfortunatly not far from here an elderly lady died when very strong wing blew her mobile home some distance with her in it. This was about 4:00 am. I did not know her but my prayers go out to her family.
