Friday Finish

This was finished the Long and Rocky Road a couple days ago, it's just now getting this all written down. As I had mention before I had started this quilt 22 years ago with many long breaks between working on it. I paper pieced the blocks from scrap fabric left over from my sewing clothing days. Some of the fabric is older than that, up to 40 years old.  And being that it's fabric used for clothing it's not all 100% cotton. It worked out just fine. Ended up being 64 1/2 x 86 1/2 Now I very rarely even piece my backs but this was when I had very stash and leftover blocks I could use. In a way it's like having 2 quilts in one. I tried to center it up to match the front as far as aliening up with the star. Was pretty close, maybe a quarter inch off.  I tried something new at the time for me was colored thread and varied my stitch size. Insides the stars I made my stitches like I have on all my oth...

Happy Dance

After 22 years, my Long and Rocky Road is completely quilted Last night I put the last stitch in. Started yesterday morning quilting on the last side of the border I had started this quilt back in 1996,  wow in the last century..... It's been a love hate relationship. I love the look and the fabric used because it is from items I made for my girls and myself. A lot of memories. But I hated the fact that it has taken so long to finish. I would work on it and for longer periods of time put it away. That is why I'll call it my Long and Rocky Road   Today it's time to attach the binding and once that is done I'll wash it. Heaven knows after all these years of toting around how dirty it is. YUCK Now I need to see which quilts are waiting to be quilted. I haven't taken time to think about what next seeing how this one was so time consuming. Wish I had kept track of the time spent making this quilt. Bet there are over a 100...

It's a Go

I believe I have an answer to how to go about getting the look I want on the border to the Rocky Road. Remember I asked about what you all thought about color and thickness of thread, and from your answers I went with the white pearl cotton. Loved the look but it was just to hard on my wrist, but wanted to have that look without the pain. So I tried using the quilting thread doubled, it was a piece a cake to stitch but thought it was not quite heavy enough. Then I had an idea about trying sulky 12 wt thread. I use this thread for embroidery work It's thicker than quilting thread but not as thick as pearl cotton. Threaded through my quilting needles....great decided I would also double it, it worked. Can you tell which stitches are which? Most is pearl cotton but there is the quilting thread and sulky. Hope this is self explainable. Where the light blue are pearl cotton...the look I like Between the yellow lines is t...

Hand Quilting

Big milestone, I finished quilting on the main body of this Blue Rocky Road  Now it time to work on the border  I have decided on what stencil pattern to do, it's from one of Helen Squire's book,  Instead of making a plastic stencil, I figured making a cardboard oval with some registration marks could work And using a white Nonce Marking pencil that can be removed with water. I find that this pencil stays on longer than a chalk pencil and great on dark fabrics. Important since I needed to mark one side because I had to make it all fit. So I laid the oval and trace and than put the marks for registration  Using those mark I can trace the curves. Voila  Ready for the hoop, and I have a couple to pick from I think I'll start with the hoop that is design for this job, edges. If not I can always use the small oval. Now comes to where I need your help, I'm no...
I worked some on the Wonky Log Cabin blocks. Finished these 6 and will do 6 more Blocks are 12 1/2 right now. Mainly today is I worked on some piecework. Quilted some on the Blue Rocky Road,  after having it put to the side for a while..... since I was quilting on the Scandinavian Christmas . Now that it's done, this quilt really needs to be finished. There is a lot of quilting in this quilt and I'm still not sure how I will quilt the border. Also this evening did some more stitching on the Mosaic Diamond Hexagon blocks. I am in the process of changing this up some and I'll get into that more later Linking up with Kathy

Slow Sunday

My Sunday was far from slow, seems like lately my weekends are all about catching up on things around the house seeing how I am gone a lot during the week. I have been working hard trying to finishing quilting on Blue Rocky Road but need to put that aside again because I want to get the Scandinavian  Christmas wallhanging completed so I can display it this Christmas. Pinned basted the sandwich. Figure since I won't be handle this for too long that pinned basting will be good enough. Haven't used this PVC hoop before and it's really not bad. Working out so far I'm doing a general outline of the large appliqued right now but will do snowflakes in the open spaces and then something around the cross stitch frame. I will quilt on this like I had been, in the morning but also put in some time in the evening too. Linking up with Kathy
