Little stuff for Christmas

It is the season for giving and receiving. These bags are for gifts, but I did not make all of them. I made the one on the right.  The bags were a cinch to make and the cutest little things. I made mine for my step mother who's birthday was yesterday. Her bag is 7x3x3 and big enough  that she could put her crochet needles in it. The one in front on the left is only 4x2x2. There are 4 sizes and will make great gifts. Can use scrap fabric cause it calls a fat quarter but you do not use but a portion of it. This  pattern is called "A Little Duffle Do It" by Karen West at www.lovethefabric.com The little pin cushion was a gift I received form a friend in the 30's club. Liz is known for excellent work in small quilts and this little block is 3". Just look at those nice points. I just love it. These make lovely gifts also. Kat

Peanut Butter Balls

Today at our 30's club we had a cookie exchange and all the cookies were so yummy. I probably gain 2 or 3 lbs. I came home with a plate load which the "man of the place" attacked. But I was able to grab a couple of  peanut butter balls before he devoured them. My friend Mary made these and they have only 4 ingredients in them and no cooking involved. So here is Mary's Peanut Butter Balls 3 1/2 c. powdered sugar 2 c. peanut butter (creamy or chunky) she used creamy 1 can Eagle Brand condensed milk Mix all together with an electric mixer just because it is pretty thick and hard to mix. Make balls about the size of a large marshmallow (not the new campfire so'more size) Melt (you can melt in the microwave) the bar of Almond bark or chocolate. Dip the balls in the melted  bark. Let cool Then just enjoy.  Link to homestead revival

Last Day of Occupation

Here it is Dec. 10th already and the last day of Occupy Your Sewing Room and I did not get to stay in mine as long as I wish I could of. Had to be in Tulsa 2 days, a day in  Arkansas and 2 Christmas parties to attend this week. But I was able to put together a top that was our 30's BOM. Not sure what to do about the border or even if it should have one. As I look at the picture, it's pretty busy, I'll have to ponder this and if anyone has any suggestions they would greatly be appreciated.  Here are a few close ups of a couple individual  blocks. I really like the fabric choices in this block.  This block was in a book that Terry Thompson  wrote about her Aunts quilts. But also all these blocks were published or popular in the 30's This is a copy of a Marie Webster block from her Basket Quilt Then because I needed to get the 30's done so it could be put up for display at the shop,  I was not able to finish the Christmas String Quilt. I hav

Celebration Time Giveaway

I have so much to celebrate and be so thankful for. First of all is my middle daughter  (who's expecting twins) today is her birthday Second I just can't believe it but six months after starting this blog, I have 50 followers. WOW!! And third is that you all have visited over 10,000 times. It's amazing and I'm so humbled by this all. What started out as an outlet for my going ons, here on the farm and my addiction to quilting could be something anyone would be interested in, is just hard to believe. And to top it all off, is that this all happen in the same day Dec. 8th. So I want to celebrate and give something back to you, so I'm going to try a give-away. I have a kit that I would like to give to someone, it's this little wallhanging. It is 6" x 22", and has the fabric for the top and floss to do the details. Easy to do. And could be up all year, not just during the holiday. So if this is something that caught your

Taco Soup

I did not get to sew today because I was in Tulsa all day, so I do not have any thing to show. For those of you that are occupying room your sewing room and maybe running out of meals and pulling out your hair trying to figure out something good easy.  I have the recipe for you. You might have already heard of it, been around for a while and that is WW Taco Soup. It use to be 2pts per serving but now with point plus it's 4. I forgot to tell you what a serving size was, it's 1 cup Taco Soup 1 lb lean hamburger 1 lg onion, chopped 3-16 oz. cans red beans, undrained 1-16 oz. can whole corn, undrained 1-16 oz. can diced tomatoes, undrained 1-15 oz.can tomato sauce 1 1/2 cups water 1- 4 1/2 oz can chopped green chilies (larger if preferred) 1 pkg. taco seasoning 1 envelope Hidden Valley Ranch dry salad dressing mix Cook the  beef and onion until browned; drain. Mix beef and onion with other ingredients in a large pan, bring to a boil; reduce heat and let si

Day 4 - Occupy Your Sewing Room

Today it's time to make the sashing and the setting squares. We'll use the light fabric that has been cut in 1.5" strips and various 1.5" strips of the plaids.  Sew 10 strip sets of light-dark-light combination.  For the setting squares. you will need to sew 1 1/2 ( one and one half) strip sets  dark - light - dark.  When strips are sewn, press the seams toward the dark. This way when it comes to the nine- patch the pieces will snuggle up to each other nicely. Need to cut 38 segement in 9 1/2" length for sashing. From each strip set you will get 4- 9 1/2" segments plus some extra. This extra piece will be part of the nine-patch Cut 15 - 1 .5" segments of light-dark-light and 30 1.5" segments of the dark-light-dark. Make 15 nine-patch setting square.  TA-DA nine-patches Tomorrow I will not be able to do much in the sewing room so I will not be able to work on this but I try to get  some time to putting

Day 3 of my Occupation

I wish I could say I'm as devoted as those protestor in the parks. I have only been able to get a couple hours a day since its started. But tomorrow I have the whole day free to set aside for my sewing room. So how are you doing on occuping your sewing room? Today I was able to get my strips sewn together. You will need to make 12 strip sets. The strip set need to be at least 7" wide but try not to get any larger than 8'. If you do there will be way too much waste. So between 7" - 7 1/2" is ideal.  After you get all your sets made you'll need to press. I press the seams in one direction.  Now I will firmly suggest, if you don't already, that is to starch your strips. It keeps your fabric stable, no stretching. Which is important because of the way the set are cut, the outside edge are on bias but like I said starching eliminates any problems.   There are all kinds on the market and as you can see I have a good number of them.

Christmas Plaid Quilt

OK here goes, my first attempt at giving instructions on making a quilt from start to finish. I have to say that  I am not very savoy on the computer and  having this blog has really widen my horizons, so this will not be high tech like some others are. But I think it will work.  I said yesterday that I had already cut my fabric into strips but at the bottom of this container I had found some  flat pieces. Now I would like to throw in a suggestion here, you know that phrase " do as I say and not as do " this is a good example. See how I  just shoved all my strips in the box, DON'T DO . For a very obvious reason (that I didn't get) the fabric wrinkles badly. DUH !! I had to spend sewing time today pressing all my strips. I had read Bonnie Hunter blog the other day about storing strips and how she decided that Ziploc were a good way to store them, fold them a couple of times so they fit and just leave the top half zipped. You know I will remember that next t
