Spring Check Ups

Last week the "Man of The Place" told me that it was time to work the cows. Now what he calls working the cows - I call their spring check up - cause its a lot like giving my cat's their annual check up So last weekend and today we did our herds. We round them up  and will seperate the cows from their calfs  so we can run them threw the chute. This is where we give them a good look and take notice of their overall health and if there anything that needs to be attended to. Like this old girl who had   a back hoof that is growing oddly and  needed a pedicure. You can see that her hoof is growing upward, forgive how gross looking it is. It does not hurt her now but it could become a problem and she could go lame. It should look like the other back foot Remove the odd hoof - or just a part - and off she went after she was dewormed and given her vaccines. We vaccinate to prevent sexual diseases and the prevention of

My Slow Sunday

I have to admit it didn't start out slow here. Yesterday while the "Man of the Place" was out checking the cattle he notice the calf that Joy (one of Snicker's offspring) had last weekend wasn't doing well. So we moved her and the calf from the pasture up to the corral to try to figure out what was going on. The calf looks like it hasn't eaten in a while so we check Joy's utter and milk.  She looked as thou she hadn't nursed much and there was blood in her milk.  We decided to give the cow a shot of antibiotics and try to give the calf a bottle of milk replacement.  The little thing barely got down 3 cups. By this time it was around 4 in the afternoon and we would just let the calf digest that bottle and we would check on her in the morning.  Well wouldn't you know that this had to be the morning that cold front from the north finally made it with some snow. And the poor little calf had made no improvements, she was weaker. Had to take

It's a Girl

Here she is Reese!!! Snicker and daughter are doing well and had no problems birthing. YEA!! (what a nice birthday present, a better one was having face time with the little dudes)

Morning Update on Snicker

Well she is still on the nest and the vaginal prolapse went back inside so that is good. I always worry about infections with prolapses  But "the Man of the Place went by the vet on the way home last night and we gave her shots last night to help relax the muscles and for infection. Then this morning we gave her Oxytocin  to induce labor, if she not already, which I thought she was. Seeing how there was no calf this morning she might not of been in labor like I thought. So now with the shot it will take 12 - 24 hours before she will birth. She is 10 years old and an experienced mom that I'm not expecting problems but you never know.  So I'll stay home and keep an eye on her, so stitch group this afternoon is out of the question now. I'll try to finish the sashing on the 30's quilt and I have started this months baby quilt for he guild. Which is this weekend. I did it in pink which was last months color for http://superscrappy.blogspot.com/ This months

Sunday Babbles

I was sitting here thinking about what I accomplished this weekend but then thinking about all I need to do before the 'little dudes" and their mothers get here. I am now counting the days. This will be the first time '" the man of the place" will have seen the boys. I helped feed the cows again yesterday and enjoy it just as much as I did last weekend. We have some new babies born this past week, including Cherry had her calf, a little boy. I did not see one eagle out there this time, I do not know how far their territory is but I know they are around. I was out in one of the pastures and notice this Sycamore tree. Looks like 5 trees in one. I have a thing for this tree, when I was a child growing up in Sacramento, there in downtown are all these trees along the sides of the streets. I have such fond memories of these trees and how big they were and the smell of them in the fall time. These trees can live a very long ti

A Day on the Farm

While "the man of the place" was out tending to the cattle this morning I figure I would clean a little and then get busy working on Clue 4 to the mystery Easy Street that Bonnie Hunter is doing. I was making good  time and just about done When "the man of the place" came in and ask if I would come outside and help him moved the cows to the pasture across the creek. You see we rotate our cows around to the various pastures we have so there is good grass for them to graze on and this time of year the pastures are at the end of their growing season and we will soon be feeding them hay but we have one more pasture that the big girls can graze. So we moved them into the corral so we could separate my cow, Snicker. And yes I do have a cow, she is the prettiest one in the group  Isn't she pretty.  She has such a lovely lock of curly hair on her head. She is 10 years old and that is getting up there for a cow. She has been such a good breeder and
