Been Catching Up Around the Farm

The past couple of the days I have been taking time to get out in the garden and harvest veggies and checking on how everything was doing. Then there is "the girls". One of the older girls decided that she needed a new wardrobe. She has a twin in the group and this how she did look right before I left Beautiful hen isn't she, white, fluffy and very clean But I notice a few days last week all these white feathers around the hen yard and that the one I speak of was losing feathers. I did not take the time to take a photo but this is how she looks now, a week later Looks like I have been getting her ready for the stock pot.  They sure grow back fast. I can't wait to see how white and fluffy she'll get. Thank goodness they do not have a mirror in the hen house.  I do not think she would like the new look, thou a lot of older ladies like to get their "do's"  cut short,  if you know what I mean The cows are good, "the man of the place" has

Sunflowers are my flavor flower. They just ooze happiness. Big, bright yellow, even the butterflies can not resist them. I love how the flower head follows the sun, facing the sunrise all the way until sunset . Love them  And to think Mr Groundhog had broke this one and it's stem is just connected by a small portion. This is one of the broccoli plants that Mr Groundhog ate down to it's stalk. I thought I would experiment and see what would happen if I just  let it grow. Well it is looking really good, now if it flowers would be the ideal outcome.                                                 The sweet potatoes are recovery well also You can see that it will be no time and I'll be harvesting the purple hull peas. These plants love the heat and seem be be a vegetable that is grown more so in the south. I did not know about these until I moved here to Oklahoma. They remind me of black-eyes peas.   I have pick a few okra pods this week. They are the most thickest plant

A Day of Firsts

Do you remember what it was like as a child and seeing or doing something for the first time. How exciting it could be. I think sometimes as adults we have become numb or to busy to look at things that way But today I had my eyes open to those feelings. Here are some firsts I had happen today. In the garden and in the sewing room. The first ripe tomatoes out of the garden. It's been a long time wait. The kid in me is so excited I could pee my pants, but the adult in me waited until I made to the bathroom. As you can see there is more. OK one more So red And then I finished my first block to Scandinavian Christmas. I just can't seem make them fast enough for my liking. The impatient child in me now. Just love this design Now here are a few more firsts out of the garden. First dug potatoes Then I picked a couple of the eggplants, green peppers and unfortunately okra that I did not know was there. It's just a little too big to fry, maybe I'll

In the Veggie Patch

I need to get you up to speed on what's been going on in the garden. Since last week I was mainly trying to catch the groundhog and just keep it all watered.  So really did not have much to report. I did not plant any new crops but did harvest my first batch of pickling cucumbers Just beautiful Ever since than I have been picking every other day. I going to make and can some lime pickles. The plants are looking good. They are in front of picture and the Okra are the shorter plants behind the cucumbers. Right now all I have are some good looking Okra plants, no blooms. You can not see the Eggplants behind the Okra, boy are they loaded with eggplants. Should be ready probably next week. The groundhog did not like those crops, plus he did not like the Peppers and Purple Hull Peas. Peppers, 3 different varieties. Purple Hull Peas The Purple Hull Peas are starting to bloom. Now the Sweet Potatoes are starting to grow back. Mr Groundhog oh so liked the Sweet Pota

What's growing in the veggie patch

One of the things I love about vegetable gardening is that each year there is always new challenges and something new to learn. Whether its a new type of vegetable or the weather. Then there are the bugs and critters.  Well this week in the garden has been good and bad at the same time. The plants that are established are going well. But being so hot the tomatoes has not set, but the plants look great. It looks like there is no relief from the heat in the near future. The seeds I sowed last week, only half of the Swiss Chard is up but none of the lettuce did make it. I think I'll start some more in pots on the back porch and then transplant them. I think they would have a better chance. The purple hull peas came up. purple hull peas Green beans They look real healthy.                                           But the beans don't, something is eating them First I thought is was a rabbit cause I have been seeing one around outside the garden. But then this morning whe
