Pullets are Hens Now

The new girls are now starting to lay eggs. Found 6 eggs out in the hen house this evening (one broke) which was a surprise but I had been expecting them to start laying. All are brown but most of the pullets will lay brown eggs. Do have a couple of white hens that will lay one eggs. So now I can say that these pullets (girls) are now becoming hens (women).

What's Up 10.25.16

I have been so busy the past two days, that I have a variety of things to share. First of all whats up on the design wall. I'm making a crib size quilt and with the small jelly roll I had it was perfect for these 4 set of Seven Sisters. I have as I write this 2 of the 4 ready to put the sections together. The other 2. I have the units made as you can see but will be sewing them into sections.   There are 6 sections I also been sewing another section of the HST border for the Words to Live By  Had put this second for a few weeks now, plugging along. "The Man of The Place" did get the Christmas boxes down  for me and yesterday I just checked them all to see if there was any mice damage. Just a couple items, almost all good. I will sort what I want to keep or past on as I decorate. Did also clean out the chicken coop and the pullets pen. Now the girls are good to go for a few.  Today I wanted to send the "Little Dudes&qu

CLUCK CLUCK

Last month when the "little dudes" came for their visit I thought it would be fun to have little chicks for them to learn about and care for while here. So I order 18 chicks, a variety of pullet (girls) and had them delivered the day before they arrived. oh they are so cute and the boys were elated with them. In fact I was worried they would love them to death but all was good. Here they are at 2 weeks Now they are 4 weeks old and they have grown a lot, they are now getting their feather and are in what I consider the ugly stage, not cute fuzzy chicks and not fluffy pretty hens.  Poor things. I don't normally get chicks this time of year cause where to keep them is a challenge. Because it's to hot in August to keep them in the garage and in the house is ok the first couple of weeks but for a little over a week now they have outgrown their box and need a bigger space and out of the house.  They do smell like st

A Good Day

It was a good day to just stay inside with the A/C on, seeing how that even this morning it was already so humid, 80%, down right sticky and thick.  After my coffee, I went out to open up the hen house so the girls could go do their thing. Beside letting them out and giving them scratch, I'll check the nesting boxes for eggs. All I could see was the golf balls I have in the nesting boxes. This is to fool the snakes so when they swallow one thinking it's an egg, it will become stuck inside them. An egg will collapse and be digested but not a golf ball so the effect of that is the snake will slither off and die somewhere.  Well that is what I came across this morning, a black snake who had swallow an egg.  Saw me and tried to escape the way it came in the box but as it was leaving in the space it enter in was now too small to pass through now, with that egg in it. And there was no way I was going to grab that thing by the tail to get rid of it. I

Working Blues

OK that doesn't sounds quite like that, it's the blue Metro Twist. I finished getting the units sewn and have half of them trimmed. Was able to get the half that was trimmed sewn together. I so wanted to get more done this evening but I was interrupted while locking up the chickens. It was already past sunset by the time I got out to the hen house, I didn't want to stop working on trimming. Anyway I went out there and notice that most of the girls were on the roost and not in the nesting boxes but it is unusually warm, like a spring day. There were 5 on roost I thought, so I looked in the boxes to start counting the others. Figured I check for eggs while I was looking. First one I put my hand in I got a gravel sound, disturb one. Went on to the other boxes and found two more eggs. The girls are starting to lay a decent amount now. Then it dawn on me that I only counted one box occuppied. Well sometimes they will double up in the box. Looked in

Farm. Chores

I thought I would show some of the farm chores I do on a daily basis. I tend to the chickens first thing in the morning to let the girls out, give a little scratch and check the nesting boxes.  Woo hoo another egg this morning.  This is the girl right there, in front.  She is the only one out of the eight that is laying eggs right now. She deserves extra scratch if I can figure out how to keep the others out of it.  Then I'll walk down to the barn to feed the heifers.  We have 10 young heifers separated, which I feed 4 buckets of cattle cubes to every day.  We have also 12 heifers who are going to give birth within the next couple of months in the pasture right next to the barn. That is also where the container that holds the cattle cubes is located.  And as you can see I have a group waiting for me to start dishing out the cubes. I have to fill 4 buckets up, but I can only carry two at a time into the barn.

Bits and Pieces

Today was a very busy and active day for me. I started out by doing the usual, which was to go out and let the chickens out of the hen house. Well there was the buzzard sitting on top of the hen house. Had my camera with me so I was able to snap a shot of him up there. It stretched its wings out but did not take off and fly. Never did see it leave.   Then had to go to the quilt shop to pick up the next two sets of blocks for the Farmer's wife Sampler.  Went by the store get a couple things. Then I went by the church and help decorate the Christmas tree which I have to say look very stunning this year. Sometimes one color can look really pretty. We did the tree only in red ornament, bows  and  Poinsettias  this year. Came home, fed the cows and straightened up a little bit because  didn't have a chance to get to that this morning before I left. I was able to get a couple hours of sewing in which I proceeded to work
