Fun Time with Dots

Welcome to my blog, I hope you can take a moment to check out my blog. Here you will find that I like to share a lot of what happens on my farm here in NE Oklahoma. You get a little of life with cows and chickens, my struggles with growing an organic vegetable garden, canning, cooking and my love for quilting, knitting and most anything that has needlework involved. Plus some....

I love the fact that I can join in on such a fun hop.
Thanks goes to our cheerleader
Corrie from  Quilt Taffy
She will have the schedule to the entire blog hop.
And special thanks to Madame Samm from Sew WE Quilt
for setting this up.

I am sharing my day with these wonderful bloggers

Now all the formality done, lets get on with what you came for, a fun project with dots

I had seen this pattern last year at a retreat I went to and fell in love. I love paisley's and what a fun way to play with dotted fabric.

First I thought I would make a small quilt or wall hanging but that
did not go as plan. I tried many variations of colors on different
backgrounds and nothing looked the way I imagined.
I had to get in touch with my creative side and
come up with something that looked good, practical and useful
(that's something I need) and did not take a lot of time.
Plus I hope it gets your creativity juices flowing and will try this,
either with the pattern I give you or maybe something you like.

So what I decided to do was to put my block on a canvas frame.

Materials:
1 – 12.5”x12.5” (unfinished)  block
4 - 2.5"x13" strips of quilting fabric
1 – 12"x12” piece of cotton quilt batting
1 – 12"x12" canvas
Staple gun

Lets start with the block I made for you,
You can download a PDF file here

I tried many combos but I liked the one on the bottom right the best. So that is the one I'll be showing.

You need your background to be 12.5 x 12.5
Trace the pattern onto some fusible web like Soft Fuse, Heat and Bond or one of your choice.

I cut out the center of the big paisley because sometimes you can see the fabric through the top piece

When placed on background like you want them, press according to your product instructions.
Now we are ready to prepare the block so it can be attach to frame.
You will need to press a 1/2" fold on each of the 12.5 x 13 strips.
Now we'll sew the strips to the block. Place one strip along the edge of your block, right sides together. Make sure the strip is centered along the edge...the strip should be 1/4" shorter than the block on both sides.

Sew a 1/4" seam and make sure to press your seam open:
Repeat with all four strips. I prefer to sew them in opposite pairs so your second strip should go along the edge opposite the first. When you get to your third and fourth strip, you'll notice that your block is now 12" and your strip lines up exactly along the edge.
After you press your third and fourth strips open, you should have a nice corner that has nice finished edges.

Place the batting in the center of block then lay the canvas frame on top of the bat.

Fold the sides of your block up and stapling on each side. It's important to keep your fabric tight without stretching it too much...you want the front to be taught but you don't want to warp the block.

If everything goes right, you will have a tiny gap at the corners:

You will need to stitch the gap closed, can do a slip stitch or a ladder stitch.

Whoa La

Can put some of those picture hooks in the back or just use the edge of the canvas to hang your block.

Now for my giveaway, when I saw this panel I first noticed the dots and felt it would be a fun one to work with.

Could use the panel as a lap top, maybe place mats or could be pillows.

All you need to do is leave a comment, If you follow my blog or decide to now, make a separate comment but it is not require. Just a bonus for my followers.

  76. Hello Kathleen-Thanks for sharing how to make a paisley using polka dots. I have another suggestion for your panel. I have taken "cheaters" or panels like that and quilted them to hang in my window for each season or month. Our front windows were covered with a coating to prevent UV damage as one of our former cats, a sweet all white boy, developed skin cancer on his ears by sitting in the sun. When we brought him in permanently it was too late, but it is an added bonus as the little quilts I hang there do not get sun damage. You can do the same thing if you have a wall to display seasonal panels. Thanks for sharing, from California(born/raised in SF, college at CSU-Chico, now live in Burlingame.

How to Make a Portable Design Wall

I had wanted to get a portable design wall to take to retreats but did not want to pay the price. Looked at various pins on pinterest and took ideas from more than one to come up with my verison. It worked out great and only cost a fraction of the price. The PVC pipes, joints and 2 yards of felt cost under $22.00 My design wall is 4' x 4' which stands approximately 5 1/5' tall. For this size need 2 - 10ft length of 3/4" PVC pipe for the frame and 4ft of 1" PVC pipe for the feet Cut the 3/4" PVC into 4 - 4' section                                                                                       2 - 1' section              Cut the 1"  PVC into 4 - 1' section          The joints you'll need will be 2 - 3/4" elbows 2 - 3/4" T's 2 - 3/4" to 1" T (this will be the base of the Feet) 4 - 1" elbow Also need pipe cutters (this cost me almost as much

Yarn Along 2/20/13 Spoon Pin Doily

It's snowing here and I know some of you are tired of snow but here we will take the moisture any way we can get it. Plus it just gives me a reason to stay in and work on some of my projects. In this picture I'm not sure if you can make it out but in the background there are some wild turkeys that hang around the house sometime, just  chilling This project I'm working on is Spool Pin Doilies.   I had never heard of them before until Bonnie Hunter had mentioned it on her blog . She a had a viewer send her one for her sewing machine along with a pattern. I did not like the pattern but loved the idea so I decided to make up my own version. I wanted a more simple, smaller and fuller doily. So I tried different thread sizes to get one that I like. (From left to right) I tried sock yarn, which I'll redo because I think I like that look. Heavy weight crochet thread, nope too big Bamboo yarn, I like it. Looks good on my Kenmore. Pearl cott

What's Up

Well that is a big question, what's up Seeing how I haven't posted since before the retreat I went to. So I will show what I did at the retreat and what I have been doing these past few days, which is this Log Cabin Christmas Tree  wall hanging I have the blocks completed and now it just a matter of getting them sewn together. I'll get to that tomorrow. While at the retreat I made this baby quilt top with the disappearing 4-patch block. I had a charm pack and used some "snow" fabric Kaufman snow is one of my favorite whites to use. It's white but not a stark, bright white, goes well with a majority of the fabric I've collected. I started late making my blocks for RCS14 First I wasn't sure what pattern I wanted to make and then with all that was going on the first part of the year, I didn't start until July. One quilt is using a quarter log cabin in solid colors. I made these at the retreat, have the other half t
