To the End of Texas

Have you ever been to McAllen, Texas. This was the first time for me and the first time I had been south of Dallas Texas. I had intentions of writing about our trip to McAllen while being there but I was so tried from traveling the first day and than setting up our booth at the quilt show. By the time we would get back to our room all I wanted to do was rest. So now I want to share some pictures of our trip and then the next post I'll show a few of the vendors I met and the some of the quilts in the show.  The first picture I took was the sign saying we were welcome to Texas, no longer in Oklahoma. I have a thing for wanting to get a pic of these signs. I did miss the one coming back that would of been a welcome back to Oklahoma.  Our first stop was a little out of the way but we wanted to go check out the quilt shop Stitchen' Heaven. I was surprise that it was located in a semi small town. It was a very nice shop. If you are near Dallas you ought go out of your wa

Egg Recipe #9

This recipe is one I eat at least once a week if not more often. Being on WW I am looking for filling dishes but low in points and this one does both. Egg Burrito This will serve one but just double, triple or more if wanting to serve more than one You will need 1 Egg Fat Free or Reduced Fat Cheese Whole Wheat Carb Balance Tortilla Salsa Scramble the egg  Heat the tortilla, I put my on top of the burner and heat it that way. I have a gas stove and so I am just using the flame heat. If you do not have gas or prefer to heat in the microwave or in a pan that's fine, just do not use any oil. That will add points and if you do you will need to make adjustment to point totals Place the egg, 2 Tablespoons of cheese and salsa in your tortilla.  Roll and ready to eat. This is 4 points plus but if you another tortilla and split the egg mixture, you will have 2 burritos  for 5 points plus. Leave out the cheese and it's 3 pts for o

Signature Quilts

Last month at our Quilt Study meeting Alice McElwain had brought a couple of her signature quilts. She has a thing for them, if she find one in at least fair shape she'll snag it up.  This was a quilt she had  purchase and was told it was from Kansas but after doing some research she found out it was actually from Oklahoma. Somewhere in the Durant area. The blocks are interesting, this here is one block.  When joined the corners make a group of hearts. the center piece where the signature goes is what I find intriguing Reminds me of a bone but I doubt that's what it is suppose to be. See the L, and the detail to the block.   I just fell in love with all the neat embroidery work. Some very creative combinations of stitches were used. All the blocks had a lot of detail.  Different from most quilts in this style I have seen. If I remember right, she dated it to be from the 30's Then she had this quilt which again is done in a uniqu

Finally Building a House

I know I was suppost to start the first of the year and build one a day. At first I thought I would do it like Jeanneke and cut out the pieces and just sew together. Copied her pattern and then life happens as usual and I did not get to it right away. By the time I got around to it, I decided I was going to paper piece instead. By then she had removed the foundation pattern. I knew I had read on another blog about  having the pattern plus some. Well that too was gone by the time I finally found out who. So my friend Liz (who has kept up and has two rows completed the last time I seen hers) helped me figure it out using EQ7 on making my own pattern. Not that it was hard, its just I'm still new at drafting and it wasn't coming to me.  I do not paper piece much  :-p  So here it is my first house. Working out the technique but I'll have it down soon and hopefully will be producing like crazy. I have some catching up, as usual, to do. I won't be doing much the

Egg Recipe #8

I found this recipe a couple of weeks ago on Martha Steward's website while looking for some ways of adding poached eggs in recipes. Needed one that I could use for dinner and since I had some spinach growing in the garden and tomatoes in the freezer, this sounded like a good one for me. You know what, it tasted very good too. This one also is a keeper Poached Eggs with Spinach Ingredients 4 large eggs 1 tablespoon olive oil 16 grape tomatoes, halved crosswise 1 teaspoon coarse salt Freshly ground pepper 8 ounces baby or regular spinach (about 16 cups), tough stems discarded 1 garlic clove 2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh chives Directions Fill a large, shallow, straight-sided pan with 2 inches water. Bring to a boil. Break each egg into a small ramekin. Meanwhile, heat oil in a medium nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot but not smoking. Add tomatoes; cook, stirring, until they start to break down, about 5

It wasn't like this earlier This is what it was She just got done taking a bath, dust bath that is. Now she is ready for a time on the farm now . You go girl.

So slow

I meant to write Monday about our first snow view from my sewing table  My stash report, what is up on my wall and the new pincushion I made. So time to waste and I'll just right to it. What's up still on my design wall is  my Hunter Star, half way done with it.  Color is hard to tell because it's a dark  indigo A pile to trim and sew together. Then I made a pincushion I had found on  Riley Blake's blog . Every Friday there will be a new pincushion pattern and so far she has had some cute one and if you are like me you'll have to try one or two. I'm hoping she'll have a turtle pincushion. The example they show is using a sundae dish and looks better using that dish, I used a parfait cup. I did not have enough fabric to do the sundae dish but I was thinking about making this again but in wool using my sundae dish. My stash report is that I used 5.75yds, 5 of it is for the Christmas Quilt along and then some for SKoW project. Di

Cutting Bias Strips from Fat Quarters

Have you ever wanted to cut some bias strips from fabric you just love and all you have is a fat quarter. Well my friend Pam made a video about how to do this and I wanted to share it. I was just amazed and I hope you are too.  I am now off to find the other one she has done and when I do I will post that one too. Happy Valentine Day

Egg Recipe #7

Today I made an Angel Food Cake and  I have to admit, this is the first time I have made one scratch and  not from the box. You know what, it is not that hard and it worked. Oh course whenever I cook my kitchen looks like I fed an army. I have never figured out why I can make such a mess when I cook.  This recipe is one I got from Martha's website.  It's a keeper Angel Food Cake Ingredients                                                      Serves 8  (6 points plus) 1 cup cake flour (spooned and leveled) 1/4 teaspoon salt 12 large egg whites, room temperature 1 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 1/4 cups sugar 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place flour and salt in a sieve set over a bowl; sift into bowl, and set aside. With a mixer, beat egg whites on medium-high until foamy, about 1 minute. Add cream of tartar; beat until soft peaks form. Continue to beat, gradually adding sugar; beat until stiff peaks form,

New Christmas Quilt-a-long

Today is the start of Hazel's Quilts  so you are just in on the beginning.  Right now it is the deciding stage of which fabrics to use. So that is what I am up to now and like Sharon at Vrooman Quilts  I will take time today to give updates on my progress. Like you I am just starting. So now I off to go find fabric.  Good way to use some of my stash. UPDATE; OK it took me a few before I could start. We have had our coldest temp so far this winter (16) and I had to take care of "the girls" and the wild birds and such. So I started looking.  Now I have a sewing room which is small and also full and knew my container of Christmas fabric was not in there so I went to the spare room where I have put a few things (just a few). Nope wasn't there so I went to the garage where I have a few tubs stacked. Again just a few.  Of course it is at the bottom of the stack in the middle behind the box of bottles  OK I finally get it out and thank goodness

Knitted Preemie Hat

I have been making hats for the boys and I was thinking maybe you would want the pattern. I had this pattern for over 10 years and before the twins coming, I would make them for Preemies in the hospital. They love to have little hats for the babies. I would wash mine first before I gave them away. So maybe you'll make some for a hospital near you. I would rate these very easy to make. Supplies; Baby Yarn and size 3  double pointed needles Directions; 1. Cast on 78 stitches, divide  on 4 needles 2. Knit 1, Purl 1  in a ribbing pattern for 2 1/4". 3. Knit rows (stockinette stitch) for 1 1/2"  Total measurement of hat is 3 3/4" 4. You will start decreasing; " K 3, K2 tog, K 3, K2 tog" for one round. Then Knit the next round.  Repeat these two rounds until there are 22 stitches left on needles. 5. Thread yarn onto a tapestry needle and draw threw all remaining stitches, pull tightly and secure. 6.  Attach a pom - pom or a ribbon bow on top

Lemoyne Star

Today I took a class on how to make a Lemoyne Star using the Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star ruler by Deb Tucker of 180 Designs. And let me tell you it made making a 3 inch star a piece of cake.  I so enjoyed making these. I had been worried I was biting off too much. But I can say now I did not.   Sharon (on right) was our instructor and a very good one. I try to take classes here at Sager Creek when Sharon is teaching, she is very good at explaining, so you can  easily  understand. I don't know about you but I do so much better at learning when I am shown how.  Joan is seriously at work trimming her pieces. Here we are with our finished blocks. Joan made a 6 inch block and mine are 3 inch blocks.  Are they not cute and you are probably wonder why I am crazy to do 3". Well I was reading  Repro Quilt Lovers Blog  about an antique Lemoyne Star quilt, I just thought I had to make this one. Now when you go to her blog you will read that this
