Homemade Laundry Soap

I had to make a new batch the other day and thought maybe you would like to try it. It is easy, a money saver and a good detergent. For just pennies a load my clothes are clean and softer than name brand detergent. ( FYI - I have hard water)

I have been making my own for a year now and do not see any difference than using a name brand detergent. It takes only 3 ingredients. They are Borax, Washing Soda and Fels-Naptha (a heavy duty laundry bar soap).
If you cannot find that bar soap I had read you can use Ivory bar soap.
You will need;

1/3 bar of fels-naptha
1/2 cup borax
1/2 cup washing soda
2 gallon bucket

You will need to grate the soap. Can use a hand grater or food processor

In a pot add 6 cups of water and the grated soap. Heat until soap is dissolved.

Measure out the borax and washing soda. I just put them together in one cup.

Add to the pot and stir until the borax and washing soda is dissolved. If it is boiling, turn off heat once dissolved.
In the bucket you will need to add 4 cups of hot water.
Add slowly the hot mixture from the pot to the bucket. Then add an additional 1 gallon and 6 cups water.

Stir the mixture thoroughly and then cover. (I use just a plastic shopping bag). Now you need to put aside and set for 24 hours.
After 24 hours the mixture has jellied up some so you will need to stir very well to mix it up.
Now you can leave it in the bucket if you want, you'll need to stir before each use or you can put in empty liquid detergent bottles. I shake the bottle before each use. That is what I do.
Use a 1/2 cup per load of laundry
When  all is done it make close to 2 gallons of detergent. As you can see I filled up 2 - 100 oz  and  1-50 oz containers, plus 2 cups. I have mot done the math but I do know that the cost of just one of the large containers of name brand detergent, it payed for all the ingredients and will make many batches of detergent.

If you want to know more just google homemade laundry soap and you'll find this recipe plus many others.

Till next time

How to Make a Portable Design Wall

I had wanted to get a portable design wall to take to retreats but did not want to pay the price. Looked at various pins on pinterest and took ideas from more than one to come up with my verison. It worked out great and only cost a fraction of the price. The PVC pipes, joints and 2 yards of felt cost under $22.00 My design wall is 4' x 4' which stands approximately 5 1/5' tall. For this size need 2 - 10ft length of 3/4" PVC pipe for the frame and 4ft of 1" PVC pipe for the feet Cut the 3/4" PVC into 4 - 4' section                                                                                       2 - 1' section              Cut the 1"  PVC into 4 - 1' section          The joints you'll need will be 2 - 3/4" elbows 2 - 3/4" T's 2 - 3/4" to 1" T (this will be the base of the Feet) 4 - 1" elbow Also need pipe cutters (this cost me almost as much

Yarn Along 2/20/13 Spoon Pin Doily

It's snowing here and I know some of you are tired of snow but here we will take the moisture any way we can get it. Plus it just gives me a reason to stay in and work on some of my projects. In this picture I'm not sure if you can make it out but in the background there are some wild turkeys that hang around the house sometime, just  chilling This project I'm working on is Spool Pin Doilies.   I had never heard of them before until Bonnie Hunter had mentioned it on her blog . She a had a viewer send her one for her sewing machine along with a pattern. I did not like the pattern but loved the idea so I decided to make up my own version. I wanted a more simple, smaller and fuller doily. So I tried different thread sizes to get one that I like. (From left to right) I tried sock yarn, which I'll redo because I think I like that look. Heavy weight crochet thread, nope too big Bamboo yarn, I like it. Looks good on my Kenmore. Pearl cott
